PORT BLAIR: Lt Gen Dinesh Singh Rana on Sunday took charge as the 18th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN), India’s sole integrated tri-service command, responsible for safeguarding national interests in the strategically crucial Indian Ocean Region.

With a distinguished military career spanning 37 years, Lt Gen Rana has held key operational, instructional, and intelligence roles across varied terrains and theatres. A former Director General of the Defence Intelligence Agency, he is the first officer from that role to be elevated as Commander-in-Chief — reflecting the growing emphasis on joint operations and defence intelligence in India’s strategic doctrine.

An alumnus of premier defence institutions in India and abroad, Lt Gen Rana has commanded formations along the LAC, served in UN peacekeeping missions, and contributed significantly to military training and staff duties. Decorated with the PVSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, and COAS Commendation, he also holds a Ph.D. in China’s defence modernisation.
