Oil India bags potash-halite block in Rajasthan in first-ever successful auction

NEW DELHI: Oil India Limited (OIL), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE), has been declared the preferred bidder for a strategic Potash and Halite block in Rajasthan, marking a significant milestone in India’s critical mineral development efforts.

The block, known as the Jorkian–Satipura–Khunja Amalgamated Potash and Halite Block, is located in the Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan. The allotment was made under the fifth tranche of mineral block auctions conducted by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India.

This is the first-ever successful auction of Potash blocks in the country, signaling the government’s commitment to unlocking domestic reserves of this vital resource, which is key for India’s agriculture and industrial sectors.

OIL’s foray into Potash exploration reflects a strategic shift to diversify its portfolio beyond hydrocarbons, aligning with national priorities of mineral security and energy transition. By entering the critical minerals space, the company aims to support India’s larger goal of self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta) in essential raw materials.

The composite license granted to OIL covers both prospecting and mining operations, enabling streamlined development of the block once exploration confirms viable deposits.

This development underscores the government’s push for strategic resource mapping and public-private participation in securing India’s mineral future.
